Water in Malta

Water in Malta comes mainly from two different sources:

  • Water Table
  • Reverse Osmosis

Below, one can appreciate the layout of the Maltese islands and the way the Maltese islands are formed from different rocks. The five different levels are:

  • Upper Coralline Limestone
  • Greensands
  • Blue clay
  • Globigerina Limestone
  • Lower Coralline limestone

- Green Sands (Ġebla s-Safra)
- Lower Coralline Limestone (Żonqor)
- Globigerina Limestone (Franka)
- Blue Clay (Tafal)
- Upper Coralline Limestone (Il-Qawwi)

The layer of Blue clay acts as a water basin as this strata of rock is impermeable. Therefore on this layer one can find the water table from which one can extract water. The picture below shows how this water basin is formed.
